Getting Older

“I’m just getting old.” How many of us have said this to explain why they forgot something or couldn’t keep up with the younger folks? I know that I have. What does God say about that? In Ecclesiastes 3:1, it says that “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…” This tells me that I am not meant to keep up with children and young adults. We have other things that need to be done.

In Titus 2, He tells us train up future generations to be godly men and women, good parents and spouses. How else will they learn if we don’t teach them? Getting older may include aches and pains, and a loss to our vanity, but we have bigger things to think about. Experiences that we have gone through can help others deal with the same situations. A listening ear is a great way to help someone share their burdens. We are the church, Jesus’s hands and feet. While we are to take care of ourselves, His Temple, we need to think of others more. God has us and we are to help others find Him.

I know that the aches and pains we deal with and the gray hair we see in the mirror may not be what we would like to see or feel, but they are pointing to wisdom gained and earned. The younger generation needs to know that today is not all there is to our lives. I can take comfort in the verse that “Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.” Proverbs 16:31 ESV. I am taking comfort in knowing that the Bible honors aging and I should, too.
