Give Thanks in All Things

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:18

I love the hymn “Doxology”, also known as “Praise God, from Whom all Blessings Flow”

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

It is short, but powerful when you focus on the words. Thankfulness is a form of Praise to God. Thankfulness is not just a reaction to good moments—it is a posture of the heart that acknowledges God’s unchanging goodness. Scripture does not tell us to feel thankful for every circumstance, but to give thanks in every circumstance. There is a difference.

Life brings joys that make gratitude overflow—but it also brings valleys, uncertainties, and disappointments. Even then, God invites us to look for His presence, His promises, and His steady hand. Gratitude shifts our focus from what is lacking to the One who provides all we need. It is an act of trust that says, “God is here with me, even now.”

Paul’s command to “give thanks in all circumstances” was written from a life marked by hardship, imprisonment, and trial. Yet he had learned a secret: thanksgiving opens the heart to peace, strengthens faith, and reminds us that God is working behind the scenes—even when our eyes cannot yet see it.

  • What blessings have you overlooked in the busyness of life?

  • Where has God shown faithfulness in your past that can anchor your confidence today?

  • What difficulty are you facing right now where gratitude might help you see God’s hand?

As we move into the holiday seasons of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, I encourage you to think about, praise, and give thanks for ALL things.

Father, thank You for Your constant presence and unchanging love. Teach me to have a thankful heart—not only when life is easy, but also in the moments that stretch me and draw me closer to You. Open my eyes to Your daily mercies and fill my spirit with gratitude that honors You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
