A Parade of Kings

As you continue to reflect on the coming of Jesus (God's gift to the world), I encourage you to go back to the beginning of Matthew. You might have been tempted, as I often am, to skip past Matthew 1:1-17 as a list of names of people you mostly don't know. This time, don't think about it as a list of names, but as a parade of kings leading to the introduction of the King of kings. In this parade, there are some unexpected people; People that feel less like royalty and more like people, broken by sin. It starts with Abraham, the man God made a contract with to save the human race and David the hero king of the Jews. But also in this parade are reminders of God's historic work in strange ways such as in the account of Judah and Tamar (Gen. 38), Rahab (Josh. 6), and David's failing with Uriah's wife (2 Sam. 11). God himself chose these people to introduce Jesus and the good news that his kingdom has come. Never forget that failure is never final with the God of mercy. God created you to use you in His royal kingdom of priests. With God, you are enough.
